The things are not as binary as many of us would want. ETF approval means that ETH is not a security but it doesn't automatically 100% mean that it is a commodity. SEC didn't use the Securities ETF approval framework however It's still legal for the SEC to approve the ETF without specifically recognizing ETH as a commodity. Since ETH has both qualities of a security and a commodity, the most logical next step would be for the SEC to expand and write new definitions/categories that are meant specifically for crypto assets.
