[*Frequently Asked Questions about the Meaning of Life*](http://web.archive.org/web/200101232358/http://sysopmind.com/tmol-faq/tmol-faq.html) (1999) by Yudkowsky was my introduction to machine learning.

As for equality, I recommend reading Frances Myrna Kamm.

For distribution of wealth, income tax.

The real goal of OpenAI is to create AI which benefits all of humanity. There are many ways to do this, but I believe OpenAI's strategies are inspired by Frances Myrna Kamm. Of course, there are different ways to quantify worth. I enjoyed reading [A longtermist critique of “The expected value of extinction risk reduction is positive”](https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/RkPK8rWigSAybgGPe/a-longtermist-critique-of-the-expected-value-of-extinction-2) by Anthony DiGiovanni.

Where I disagree with most utilitarians is on the worth of truncated existence. I have a 'rage against the dying of the light' stance towards death, and condemn the 'they will die at some point anyway' and 'it is okay to kill cows if you persuade them to commit suicide' stance, and reject the 'death is nothing' stance. Therefore I view existence as a universal right, and place more importance on pacifism than the paradoxical utility of convincing people to commit suicide. Even so, there are many great arguments for self-extinction, which is the safest way to minimize harm. My personal argument is that self-extinction will still be on the table if we fail to create the energy infrastructure required to make a benevolent society economically viable (e.g. asteroid mining plus lab-grown meat). And that pursuing survival trajectories generates more political capital because they pass common sense metrics. Ideally we start a cosmic rescue today and reincarnate every involuntarily slain intelligent life to the cloud, and start regulating predation everywhere, but this would require breakthroughs in off-planet industry, nuclear energy, or solar. I think with AGI we can solve these problems before the cost of fossil fuel becomes prohibitively expensive.
