People think the economy is in shambles because they don't understand economics. They also don't believe economic health indicators reported by the government. Those people are often conservatives who are biased by their political beliefs. Other than that you've got new poor and old poor. Things haven't been bad for poor people for a decade, this isn't anything new. Rent hasnt been affordable and has been skyrocketing the whole time. Buying a house has been incredibly unaffordable for most despite interest rates having previously been low. It's not like people only just now are having trouble saving tens of thousands of dollars for a down payment or struggling to get a decent mortgage loan despite their massive debts. Car prices have been insane too. There's nothing about the current situation that is much worse than the last decade besides perhaps grocery and gas prices. So, an extra $200 a month for most? At least some jobs have improved relative pay and many people are getting relief from their student loans.
