Because not all demographies are structured equally. In a country with a balanced demography, you have a good mix of people who are investing into capital to make things to sell, and people who are borrowing to consume things. In a rapidly aging economy, you don't have a lot of consumers, but you do have a lot of investors trying to sell off goods that their missing consumers can't buy. China is an aging economy. So is Europe. The US is aging too, but not nearly as rapidly. With this large a share of the global economy transitioning into aging populations, trade becomes a zero sum game. The US with it's massive consumer economy can decide who will outlast the other at this point, but it can't afford to prop up both.
