Two major things contributing to food insecurity are: 1. Wages having stagnated since the 80s. We’re just letting corporations pay people less so they can make record profits, and pay dividends to their shareholders. 2. Rents having increased by an average of 15-20ish% since the start of the pandemic. Food is harder to afford because so much more of our net pay has to go to keeping a roof over our heads.
There should be AGGRESSIVE rent control on publicly and privately owned rental accommodation, we need to limit corporate ownership of residential units, AirBnBs should be heavily limited, and we need to build F-tons of different types of affordable housing. We also need to tie wages to regional cost of living, at bare minimum the minimum wage. It’s revolting that someone in Canada, with a full time job, should be housing or food insecure.
