Mostly because I didn't want to get in the crosshairs of the IRS. With the ETFs, everything is done by your broker and you get a form. As long as you file using the form, you are good to go.

For probably about 5 years, I did self custody. Started in 2017. And, while I did my best to keep records, there was always this nagging thought in the back of my head that any IRS flunky in cubicle 23 could make my life a living hell despite my best intentions.

(Note: There are better online tools now for tracking capital gains using the blockchain than there were back when I started. I literally tracked on spreadsheets. Probably thousands of transactions).

The other aspect is my wife isn't as crypto savvy as me. And I didn't want her to have to deal with it in the event of my untimely demise. haha Yes, the self-custody purists will say "well just teach her how" but that's not always foolproof either.

I was out of crypto from 2022 well into mid-2023. When the ETFs launched, it was a no brainer for me. I still think self custody is a defining selling point for BTC. But, for some, it's more prudent to delegate custody to a third party. In my case, I simply decided the benefits of the ETFs outweighed the benefits of holding my own keys.
