So I do The NY Times Betweenle every day. If you’re not familiar, you have to guess a 5 letter word that’s between aaaaa and zzzzz. When you guess a word like “smart” it’ll tell you you’re 28 steps from aaaaa and 10 from smart, or whatever, so you know it’s between those two, but closer to smart. The steps have some kind of weight, but they’re not letter spacing exactly. A isn’t 26 steps from z from my understanding.
Then you keep narrowing it down based on the weight of the clue. You can get a close as 0.01 away which is like couch and cough for example.
I had the idea to ask ChatGPT to help, and it failed spectacularly. I gave 4o the website, the rules, and all the background I could. It started ok by guessing a word in the middle of the alphabet, makes sense. Then as I tried to narrow it down it kept suggesting things like flaky when the last word was flair. I was like, “no, flaky is after flair alphabetically, it needs to be between bound and flair”. It said, “oh sorry, how about flame”. I kept reiterating that m comes after i, so that can’t be right, and it kept getting it wrong repeatedly.
I tried with 3.5 just for kicks and it also failed terribly.
I assume it’s really bad at alphabetical challenges because the tokens aren’t letters, but instead portions of words? I just don’t see how a model this complex can fail so badly at what you would think is a simple task of alphabetizing words.
Curious what you think is the reason it’s so bad at this game.
