I hope this hasn’t been asked multiple times, though I have searched first:)

I understand that qualified withdrawals from a Roth IRA can take place tax free after I have held the account for more than five years, starting with the first investment made, once I am 59 1/2.

What happens to the investments made during those five years? Does each investment have to be held for five years?

For example, let’s say the account was started four years ago. I’ll be 59 1/2 next year. Today I buy 100 shares of stock X in the Roth IRA. Next year when I am 59 1/2, that investment has doubled. Can I withdraw all of the earnings tax free, even though I have only owned them for one year?

Thanks in advance!
