On May 15, 1525, the Battle of Frankenhausen ended - the decisive battle of the Great Peasant War in Germany. It happened between the army of the rebellious peasants under the command of Thomas Munzer and the combined forces of Landgrave Philip of Hesse and Elector Johann of Saxony.

In 1524, driven to the handle by both spiritual and secular oppression, the German peasantry took up arms. A peasant war broke out in Germany. Tellingly, citizen Martin Luther, who looked with poorly concealed indifference at how princes and knights socialize church lands, reacted to the peasants' speech with a message full of Christian peacefulness and Protestant ethics, where he first compared the rebellious peasants with a rabid dog, but the message ended with the most peaceful: "Therefore, dear sirs, liberate, save Help them immediately. Have mercy on the poor people. Stab, beat, and strangle anyone who can. "Philip of Hesse and Johann of Saxony immediately took Brother Martin's words as a guide to action.

The battle began on May 14th. On May 15, Philip and Johann, using a trick, interrupted hostilities and offered to start negotiations, but treacherously violated the truce and attacked the peasant army. Columns of Landsknechts, flanked by cavalry, under cover of bombardment fire suddenly attacked Wagenburg, built by Munzer at a height.

Poorly organized, poorly armed and untrained peasant infantry could not resist the sudden attack of well-armed landsknechts and knight cavalry, supported by artillery fire. The peasants retreated in disorder to Frankenhausen and the forest, suffering heavy losses. The enemy cavalry broke into the city and captured it. The rebels lost up to 6 thousand people. killed and 600 prisoners. The enemy's losses were insignificant. Munzer himself was captured, tortured, and executed on May 27, 1525.
