At best it 'works' 1/2 the time and backfires on you the other 1/2 the time. If you get a minute pull up the Ibbotson chart that graphically shows the stock market performance over time. Through wars, rebellions, depressions, assasinations and whatever the upward trend of the market has prevailed.
