I may be oversharing, but I think a lot of folks in the space were and are fueled by hype without a deep understanding of the tech combined with a lack of vision.

I think we have all heard about the "game objects as NFTs" that was widely regarded as "dumb" due to the technical difficulties of sharing hydrated game objects between discrete games built by the same team. The difficulties are even greater when one thinks about sharing data between competing studios.

The idea of taking an enchanted sword from Game A and dropping into Game B is not practical.

But, that's probably the wrong approach. Here's a better idea:

Metadata from Game A stored as an NFT (all opaque to the player in the sense that they don't have to care about crypto to make it work) can be read by Game B.

Here's a less abstract example:

Game A is a Metroidvania with achievements. One achievement may be to complete the game within a certain time without taking any deaths. That achievement gets minted as an NFT with the metadata and proof that the player achieved this elite task.

Game B reads the wallet and sees Game A's achievement. Game B can use this metadata to unlock bonus content, or make the game more difficult, or grant an exclusive perk, or anything else.

It would be impractical to share serialized binary blobs on chain, but JSON metadata seems perfectly reasonable.

I would love to collaborate with other game developers on a system like this but I find it difficult to find trustworthy partners who aren't slimy grifters.
