Oh I agree overall for sure. I think it's better if you can find ways to cope that dont require the use of additional substances. Especially for example when it came to my anxiety disorder and panic attacks. Benzos stop that immediately of course, but actually having to take a benzo isn't great. It's never great to take a narcotic or something similar for chronic issues, of course.

But I do also think that it's somewhat hard wired in some individuals, so to speak, to want "something." Not to repeat myself, but seems like you get what I mean there. And that's why I totally agree with your sentiment at the end. That's actually something of a significant issue with state run treatment in my state. They are so rigid with their one size fits all ideology that doctors working in state run (non private) treatment with patients that are receiving subsidized care can do extremely little to customize their care for their patients' actual needs.

Years ago, an old doctor I used to see told me all about this when she was forced to remove me from the program. Without any prior notice, on a Friday. The day I was supposed to re-up my medicine. They think it's totally okay to casually toss you into chaos because.....you missed a group meeting. That your doctor agreed was of no benefit to you or your continued sobriety. Not even joking that this happened to me, and it also happened to another woman that same day at that same clinic. Except I was able to find a private practice doctor and haven't looked back. That woman had overdosed by the end of the next week.

I think these policies are the way they are intentionally, however.
