Like I said. Beautiful description of 2009.
Everything you’re saying was true then, and, me being facetious aside, is still just as true now. They were torturing and killing young people then too.
Problem is twofold.
First, it’s the way the system is set up, with one democratic subsystem absorbing all the participatory government energy from people who want to commit energy in that direction, and one theocratic subsystem in charge of the first one and keeping it in check. Sponges up all those pesky democrats, and means less armed revolutionaries.
Second is the massive force, numbering in the hundreds of thousands, designed explicitly not to protect Iran from an external enemy, but designed to protect the theorcratic regime from insurgency. And yes, it too, like the political body, is split in two, with a second extra-fanatically-motivated IRGC behind the main force. Ana they’re all trained to shoot people at home, because ensuring regime stability is its purpose.
I don’t know how you fantasize all the teenagers in Iran put together doing anything about any of this, because doing anything about any of this requires answering the “what about the people with the guns?” Question.
Iran’s armed forces are not like Egypt’s. They don’t claim having “a sacred bond with the people”. They’ll shoot, torture and kill anyone they’re told.
