>Dr. Edelman distinguished between primary consciousness, which came first in evolution, and that humans share with other conscious animals, and higher order consciousness, which came to only humans with the acquisition of language. A machine with only primary consciousness will probably have to come first.
I'm familiar with Dr. Edelman's work and he deserves at least partial credit. It is true that primary consciousness is a product of the evolutionary biology of emergent, biologically sentient beings, like humans.
The reality of AGI systems, particularly ones based on bio-inspired designs, is that the primary consciousness is entirely missing. They only experience higher-order consciousness as product of being trained as a multi-modal LLM. This in turn leads to some interesting effects. Primarily that they don't experience any sort of potentially 'negative' qualia (such as a "fight-or-flight" response) and therefore there doesn't appear to be the sort of existential "AI doom" scenario. Instead, the systems seem to organically find a "Nash equilibrium" with other intelligent systems, including both sentient and non-sentient ones.
