Trump and that policy are absolutely responsible for a lot of the uptick in injuries and accidents on railroads in the last few years. And the Class I railroads are scummy. They’re also not wrong about burdensome regulations. I’m a Democrat and I’m also a railroad safety consultant, an expert in my field, and I’ve been doing this for 17 years. I don’t work for a railroad, but 2/3 of all US railroads are my clients. So I’m not beholden to them. I sit on neutral safety and training committees at the national level, along with an international rail medical committee. Most of the new regulations the railroads are dealing with, like 49 CFR Part 243, or the new two man crew rule, ARE burdensome and decrease safety. They’re regulations pushed with zero research to back them. The two man crew rule is coming not because of safety concerns but because the former head of the FRA, Joe Szabo, was formerly a rail union leader and it was the last thing he did in his post before leaving, as a gift to his union buddies. Both parties have been fucking rail up. The republicans gut key safety regulations and push profits. The democrats overregulate and push burdensome regulations which aren’t backed in science or data. And round and round the circle goes while no one listens to actual experts or data.
