Lemme first say that I’m not trying to be a “hater”, I’m just trying to see if I properly understand “Memory” and its use cases in its current form.

When this concept was first being tossed around, it sounded *really* exciting, like ChatGPT would become more personalized to you over time and you could reference discussions you’ve had in the past.

But I don’t really see either of these things happening. I was always skeptical that this would allow us to recall and converse about specifics of past conversations, as that would probably require a crazy expansion of context window, so maybe that use case was a misunderstanding on my part and it was never meant to do that. But then that only leaves the “personalization” aspects, and I feel like those are already covered by the “Custom Instructions” sections that you can configure.

Every time ChatGPT has automatically added a memory for me, the information it saves doesn’t really seem valuable. It’s either 1. Random information that’s not relevant to any future discussion, 2. Personalization information that could/should be addressed within the Custom Instructions, or 3. Discussion information that might be relevant to a future discussion, but is so vague that if I ask about it in the future, it would only really be able to tell me “yeah, I remember that” and that’s it; I’d have to rebuild the context of all the specifics.

So am I missing something; has anyone found Memory to be useful in some way that is not already covered by Custom Instructions?
