The U.S. Customs and Border Patrol FAQ says this about the purpose of the wall:

Border wall construction is intended to provide persistent impedance and denial to illegal cross-border activity. Border wall systems provide U.S. Border Patrol agents a greater ability to detect and respond to illegal cross-border entries.

And in [this 2018 interview,](https://www.npr.org/2018/01/14/577969830/what-border-patrol-agents-think-about-immigration-policy) a border patrol spokesperson says the wall is an integral part of all the methods needed to control the border.

On the other hand, [this CATO piece](https://www.cato.org/blog/border-wall-didnt-work) claims the wall didn't work and [border apprehensions have increased](https://borderoversight.org/2024/03/28/border-patrol-migrant-apprehensions-at-the-u-s-mexico-border-october-2011-april-2020/) since it was built.

So, what's the evidence for and against the effectiveness of the Southern border wall?
