I do think the campaign has a problem with folks who feel like they are struggling financially, but the fact is the economy is broadly good. There is a disconnect between public sentiment and the data, and I believe (and I think the Biden admin does too) that it’s the public sentiment that’s wrong. Here’s why:

I’m not discounting that a lot of folks feel underwater rn and are struggling—and Biden team needs to address this fairly and substantially—but frankly, the data does not support the argument that things are worse than ever or that most people feel like they are hurting. They aren’t, and when polled, a majority are saying their financial picture is good or fine:

There are struggles that have existed for a long time before Biden or Trump: low minimum wage, unaffordable housing, etc. that I think the pandemic exacerbated. There are always folks who are struggling, who deserve empathy and for their issues to be addressed, but the economy is fundamentally good. It’s the vibes that are bad.
