Counter-point: I had a fourth-gen Core i7 with an Nvidia 760. Red Hat (and thus, Fedora and all its variants) dropped support for “legacy” Nvidia GPUs, and the newest GTK renderer (and thus, Gnome) assumes users have more modern hardware and [fails to run with no fallback](https://old.reddit.com/r/gnome/comments/1bnjx22/gnome_apps_do_not_show_text_unless_fullscreen/l0u9d6m/) for older stuff. Yeah, I was frustrated, but supporting older hardware takes man-hours and impedes the implementation of new features.

My buddy sent me most of his old rig, getting me onto an eighth-gen Core CPU, and Windows 11 has been… kinda nice, actually. Here’s some things I noticed:

* You can install it offline, no Microsoft account required. You don't need to do anything special, either. I simply did not own a PCI wifi card to install, nor own a lengthy enough LAN cable.

* Users can decline Microsoft’s additional services. The prompts go away. “Ad- infested” is a stretch.

* Windows identified all my hardware, including the GPU and mouse, and installed drivers *and* software from Nvidia and Logitech, unprompted.

* Windows has a package manager built into the OS now. Want to install Blender? Type **winget install blender**. It keeps everything updated, too.

* Setting up a developer environment? The dev-home tool automates the otherwise tedious process. Pick the tools and software you want, it fetches everything and even sets up a partition for ya.

* Fractional scaling on a 4K display works out of the box. We’re *how* many years into Wayland, and no Linux distro I’ve used has figured this out.

* Managing windows/desktops is leaps and bounds ahead of anything I've seen on either Linux or OS X.

* After I signed into my Microsoft account, Windows found my old OEM Windows 8 Pro license and activated Windows 11 Pro. The only hardware that made the jump were my mouse and keyboard, so I wasn’t expecting that.

I’ve only been using Windows 11 for a week. Hands down, best operating system I’ve used. And that’s coming from somebody that still knows where their direct mailer DOS 6.22 upgrade disks are located. I’ve *been around*. Know what I mean, Vern?
