I see it more as Hollywood’s battle with AI. The media cartel doesn’t like media being around that they didn’t create, and they’ll fight generative AI from every side to limit it’s power and protect an outcome where they only people allowed to use it are themselves. But you can’t copyright “sounding a bit like x” or even “sounding a lot like x”. Scarlet Johansen did not invent the English language or a breathy New York accent. There are probably 10,000 living people who sound as much like Scarlet Johansen as “Sky” does. So this is just one of many. Expect hysterical reactions to deep fakes saying that ordinary people shouldn’t have access to Generative video and images. Newspapers are already suing for AI disseminating accounts of events. Disney will probably go after copyright. Anyways, I’m not necessarily in favor of the AI companies either. This is like being cannon fodder in a war between two major powers, where you couldn’t give less of a shit who assistants whoever’s nephew to start the war, you just hope you don’t get blown up. But certainly, it’s worth calling a rose a rose, and this is just another salvo from the Hollywood battleship at BigTech’s destroyer, fighting for control where concepts around justice and altruism are wholly unrelated.
