Where are you getting that idea?
https://www.cnbc.com/2024/04/05/job-growth-totaled-303000-in-march-better-than-expected-and-unemployment-was-3point8percent.html
Unemployment at 3.8%, payrolls up by over 300k, wages up 4.1% y/y. This is as of March.
Here's the y/y for wage growth charted up til April:
https://www.atlantafed.org/chcs/wage-growth-tracker
So while it may not have grown as much y/y as last month, it's still average/above average compared to the past 20+ years.
Real disposable income is also up, though not quite as much y/y. It is not negative.
https://www.whitehouse.gov/cea/written-materials/2024/03/29/real-wage-and-income-growth-continue-to-support-consumer-spending/
So again, no, the economy is not doing bad by objective metrics. Whether or not news media actually chooses to report reality is a different case.
I didn't bother with your personal example because frankly anecdotes aren't really pertinent to a discussion of macro views. That's not a slight against you, simply that I don't think it matters when we're talking about aggregate data.
Edit:
Literally the only thing I can find that is negative regarding real income is here:
https://www.bls.gov/news.release/realer.nr0.htm
M/m there was a real income decrease, but it was still up y/y so it's hardly "bad".
