Religions are not uniformly evil, some do charity work and in the days before phones and the internet they often were instrumental for providing a sense of community especially in low-population rural areas. It would be just as big a mistake to call them uniformly good though. Imperialism is a symptom of big religions, not a cause of their oppression. Your small-town, one-church, "denomination no one outside of that town has ever heard of" religion is every bit as capable of causing suffering and oppression, the only difference is scale. For most of human history up to today even in many progressive countries, if you were atheist or of a different religion or lgbt, you kept that shit to yourself or your life would get real miserable real quick. There are exceptions of course and progressive, tolerant churches but they have historically been just that, exceptions. It is quite arguably not the size of the religion but its contents that is the source of its bad qualities. Size merely allows suffering and oppression on a greater scale.
