The history of NATO is a history of superpowers engaged in protracted stand-offs - until fairly recently, one giant nuclear dick waving competition - Ireland was, and is, a militarily insignificant non-nuclear country so far from conflict that the only defence we got was from a threat posed by other peoples wars spilling over. So there's a generation that still thinks, "what's in it for us" but that is changing.

We would only ever have been collateral damage in the kind of conflict that NATO was created for. Now the world and the nature of war has changed and Ireland is, sort of, more relevant internationally. We do need to change with it but I doubt that we will ever be able to contribute materially or in manpower to NATO in any meaningful way - monetary contribution and to expand our collaboration with the US in terms of airports etc. is more or less all we would be capable of.
