I asked ChatGPT-4 to write a brief text with a maximum of 200 words. It gave me a 247-word text.
I told it to rewrite it and to reduce the word count to 200 words, as stated in the prompt. It then gave me a text with 242 words, then I corrected it again, and it gave me a 237-word text, then 232… At this point, it kept telling me that the text had 199 words… Then, I informed it that it was wrong again for the 5th time, and it gave me a 225-word text, and it told me the text had 191 words! At this point, I was so frustrated, I kept insisting on it to see how many iterations it would take for it to get it right.
After the 6th iteration, still it wasn't doing it right, and now the text had been reduced to 214 words, for which it told me it had 197. I started to grow bored with it and tried for the 7th time… And it got it wrong again, editing the text to 214 words and telling me it had 194 words.
Then finally, at the 17th iteration, I decided to tell it to edit out one paragraph so that it could give me a text with less than 200 words. So it did and the output now had 179 words (for which it told me it had 184 words by the way)
So, what's the problem? Was it because my prompt was not specific enough, or incorrect? What's up with that? Why can't it perform such a simple task that any old online word counter can do accurately the very first time? I'm not familiar with coding and all, so I thought I would ask you guys. What should I have written in my prompt for it to get it right the first time?
Oh, by the way, Gemini 1.5 Pro got it the very first time, and it wrote a 159-word text, and a better written one at that. And GPT-4o was able to get to exactly 200 words after the 6th iteration. GPT-4o at least admitted it was wrong once I told it and kept iterating to get the right word count, so the experience was a bit less annoying and frustrating.
