I strongly feel we are on the precipice of AI being a better path for education for your child vs going to a standard public school.
The tool google showed at their recent conference (load in coursework, have the AI generate the course material, produce a podcast out of it you can actively participate in, etc) shows we're essentially there already (assuming the demo wasn't staged). We just need it packaged into a tool that can handle teaching enough of the curriculum, and correctly remember the child's progression and ensure it's meeting a certain level. And perhaps we need a few more tools and content added to support additional types of lesson formats.
I think the last big hurdle is how to quickly generate coherent videos, images and animations to create the accurate supporting material necessary to convey some topics that can't be done effectively through text / audio. You could make this content manually (either by hand or with generative AI), but that takes us back to the same expensive process many proprietary and costly tutoring software suites have had to contend with for the past couple decades.
Technology has been hailed to out-compete public school soon for many years, but I think it's really about to happen now. It doesn't necessarily have to start out as good as a passionate teacher, it just needs to be better at educating children than the standard format of loading 30 kids into a classroom room for an hour is.
