No, they're not data. They're lives.
We're not talking about writing a research paper here. We're not crunching numbers in a classroom. I don't think Joe-Bob down at the hardware store is trying to convince leading economists that we're actually going through a genuine recession. He's using the word "recession" as a layman. As a non-technical term. The way lots of people say they're "depressed" without any kind of clinical diagnosis.
Again - regardless of what the economic indicators show, lots of people are struggling financially. Pointing out that "the economy" is actually doing great doesn't help. It doesn't pay the bills. It doesn't put food on the table.
