yeah, no, they are attacking Ukraine for the same reason they attacked Georgia and Crimea: they are afraid of losing their oil money.
Ukraine has access to the second largest proven natural gas fields in all of Europe, and existing pipelines to deliver it to the EU at a lower cost than russia could (looking at pre-war here). As soon as Ukraine started making deals with western oil companies to develop the Crimean oil fields, the "little green men" started showing up. Same thing happened in Donbas a decade ago when natural gas fields were starting to be developed there. Georgia was invaded when they started building a pipeline that would let oil and gas from the Caspian Sea get to the international market. This war was started because russia cannot function as a state without selling oil and gas in the long term and they know this. Their stability as a state is directly tied to their energy sector. They expected this war to be over in a few days and sanctions to be minimal (like they were when they invaded Crimea)... they didn't expect Ukraine to actually fight, let alone fight this long.
Ukraine joining NATO would forever prevent russia from invading, and they know that. That's why they invade countries they are afraid will join the alliance as a country cannot join NATO if they have an ongoing border dispute.
russia keeps touting their nukes because it's the only thing keeping them from being completely wiped off the map through conventional warfare. They have not had the means to defend their own lands from NATO for 20 years, and now they are at \~20% effectiveness due to getting their crap kicked in by 30-40 year old tech. The reason they keep saying "we will nuke you if you send X" and then never doing anything about it is because they know that once they play that card there is nothing left in their arsenal that could stop the response.
russia has already lost this war, the BEST they can possibly hope for is to hold some worthless dirt. NATO is larger and stronger than before, russian military weakness is open for the world to see, they lost billions in military contracts to build equipment for other nations, nearly half a million men in their prime are dead (further fucking up their demographics)... they are, without a doubt, weaker than they were before the conflict
And again, russia has NEVER once stepped one foot over the line into a NATO country, not one, not ever. Not due to lack of desire, but due to lack of ability.
