Now there are many ways a person's reading habits can be tracked. Even indirectly. Ad providers already get some information about what sort of pages a unique id (eg. a person's personal device) frequent, and can set a pattern to what the person likes based on that. What books a person read doesn't require much guess work either. It's more likely someone is reading a popular book, and due to habits be also targeted for receiving ads about current popular books.

Lastly. I assume the applicatons mentioned have some sort of receipt system that gets sent to an e-mail address. If that happens to be an gmail address, I would not be surprise if Google ad-sense service has already tagged them for book related ads.
