High voltage transmission lines across states are some of the most difficult impediments to a clean grid. You can’t just suddenly dump hundreds of megawatts on Wyoming. You lose power in the transmission, so you can’t just send it all to Chicago or Minneapolis. There’s also the Rocky Mountains. This is one of the most challenging infrastructure/regulatory problems of the last 50 years.
My understanding is all new residential solar installations in Cali are required (or at least heavily incentivized) to have battery backup to even out the load on the grid, address the duck curve, help alleviate some of the springtime curtailment. But I don’t live there. I’m no expert. Utility scale storage is coming, but it will be absolutely ENORMOUS in scale, and, strangely, not go through all that many charge/discharge cycles. So, enormous Capex with a brutally long ROI.
