I agree that Ireland should join NATO but to say that our protection from the UK is in any way altruistic is silly. The only reason for anyone to attack us is to have a staging point to attack the UK and other NATO members or to go through our airspace to attack them.

We are a refuelling hub for US military aircraft and what little military force we have is frequently deployed as UN peace keepers overseas in Africa and Lebanon so our true neutrality is questionable as it is.

The only reason to attack us was our geographical location and that in itself meant that anyone able to project the power to get here in force would annihilate us in a week no matter what we invested.

We are a tiny country that has only been able financially successful since the late 1990's (and even then the 2008 crash destroyed a lot of our gains), through the most peaceful period in Western European history. That's changing and we need to change with it but there was no urgency to build ourselves up militarily until now.
