The US has a lot of problems (I'm Australian by the way), but I'd suggest they relate more to other issues (wealth inequality, lack of investment in public healthcare and education, a civil war that never really ended and just kind of turned into a cold cultural war) rather than freedom of speech. They got that one very much right.

I agree that it's better to prefer to be civil, as you put it - *as a choice*. That's a sign of a mature, decent person in most situations. I will never agree, though, that it is right for the state to censor speech because it offends people. Again, the answer to speech you don't like is to ignore it (or criticise, argue back, lampoon it, etc.).

When you allow the state to censor speech, that's a dangerous road to go down.
