You can pretty much draw a line from when the victorious Union let the south off easy until now. The people running this whole charade in the GOP have more than just a passing connection to the confederacy and the ideas of Jim Crow laws. We *think* the civil war was a long time ago, but the last civil war pensioner died in 2020 and it’s pretty conceivable that a lot of boomers may have had a grandparent or great grandparent that fought in the civil war.
