The TLDR is that airdrops arent eligible for income tax if you havent 'done anything in return' to receive them. This is a bit of a loose term so i pushed for a bit more clarification and received the following from someone on HMRC's official X account:

"*It is unlikely to be liable to income tax if you have received a randomised airdrop or an airdrop for just holding a certain type of token, as no action has taken place to receive them. Nancy.*"

I take this as confirmation that staking token 'X' and receiving token 'Y' (without expecting it) is not liable for income tax. I have screenshots of the full transcript if youd like me to DM them to you?
