Reporters Without Borders compile an annual Press Freedom Ranking that discusses the outcomes of such laws. Most western European countries (about rank 1-30) perform better than the US (rank 55) despite having more laws restricting some kinds of speech because:

1. They extend specific protections to the press, whereas the US lets police get away with intimidation, assault, and arrests of journalists far more easily.

2. They have a wider media landscape with less concentrated ownership and better protection for journalists towards their employers.

3. Most of these European laws HELP proper journalism and legitimate discussion rather than harm it, by limiting the amount of harassment, disinformation, and hatred in the information sphere. These negative aspects are often particularly aimed against the press and help to legitimise and motivate violence and restrictive laws against the press.
