The US hegemony that has existed since WW2 has now been dismantled and China has taken its place. The tension between these two countries is just the natural friction that occurs when power relations change. The Taiwan situation is the the manifestation of this tension.

Back when UK was ceding it hegemony to the US there was similar tension, and now the UK is junior partner to the US.

Eventually the current tension will subside and in our lifetime we will see the US play junior ally to hegemonic China.
