This time is unusual because the virus has already passed through a mammalian vector (cows), which could make the virus less lethal in humans. The ~50% case fatality rate has been with infections caught directly from birds.

I'm really hoping the fact that the virus has been adapting to mammals before getting to us means it will be less lethal... I'm not super confident we will be able to contain this, especially once it spreads more in wild bird populations.

I'm still masking for COVID... what's another four years... Sigh...
