Well that would be harrowing to experience but it’s not like you turn 65 and withdraw all your money at once either. If one kept it rolling and withdrew what they needed they would have done just fine in the years after.
For anyone that doesn’t feel like a financial wizard (I don’t feel like one myself), you can always take a target date fund which slowly rolls you from stocks into bonds. By retirement you should mostly be in bonds which won’t go down in value when the stock market does. This isn’t complex to navigate, it’s one of the easy options to take. I don’t think any of this is any more complex than doing your taxes or collecting pensions or social security.
