So, why do people "believe" the US is in a recession?

Maybe, just maybe because they feel it that way? And if your buying power is going down, you can't afford the same lifestyle as a few years before, your personal economy IS in recession. Hence there seems to be a recession for a considerable number of people... Maybe the definition of recession shouldn't be about the "pie shrinking" but about a majority of people getting more pie?
