In the real world though no one cares about the rate of inflation but actual price levels .
I’m taking it to an extreme but if inflation raised the cost of item A from $50 to $100 the previous year and now it’s $103.40, no one cares that inflation is now only 3.4%. People are rightfully pissed at intelligentsia telling them that inflation is basically over and it’s not an issue anymore because they are still anchored to pre COVID prices for comparison.
This is the great disconnect between the data and the average consumer and the gloom and doom vs euphoria between Main Street and Wall Street
A pound of steak going from $22.99 to $23.99 this year isn’t a great victory when a few years ago it was $12 a pound. Slow inflation on top of rapid price increases the previous years doesn’t make anything more affordable.
