I've never invested in anything and I don't have a retirement account.

I have 5 digits worth of cash saved and I'm looking for something I can put my money into that would keep it safe. I worry about inflation and my dollar losing value sitting in my bank account and am looking for advice. I've done research but there's so much I am having trouble following what to do exactly. So far it's open a Roth IRA account and put money in index funds? Any help would be appreciated Thank you!
