For your purposes index funds and ETFs are similar if you’re talking about low cost funds/ETFs which are tracking the sp500 (index funds are only traded after hours, while ETFs are traded all day long). Schwab and Vanguard both have funds which track the sp500. Are you young? 20s or 30s? I would just funnel as much money into SWPPX and/or VTI and set it to reinvest dividends and just keep pumping whatever free money you can into it. It will really start to add up after a few years
