For most people the economy IS down. If you can't afford basic necessities then stock prices going up means literally nothing. As per usual things are measured based on those who are well off and the poor are ignored.

And for younger people like me. making a decent amount of money, and having no debt or dependents still barely gets you the ability to just survive. When basic necessities are so astronomically high then nothing else really matters.
