Mini Coopers are easy to find used and for great prices. While most would not like the actual Cooper because it is pretty small, the Clubman and Countryman easily support a family of 4 plus dog. They are much bigger inside than you'd imagine too. Don't fall for the Minis are garbage crap. That was true for second Gen Minis but anything made after 2015 has proven above average reliability and the B48 engines are rock solid. Maintenance is few and far between and actually only 10-12% higher than standard fare so also totally reasonable.
Edit. Just looked and you can pick up 1st gen Mini Cooper Convertible S (up to 2008) for under 7 grand all over the place with under 50k miles. Easily a solid pickup and extremely easy to wrench on. Easily the most smiles per gallon you'll ever get in that price range.
