Oh, I agree. I was just surprised. I thought you were rejecting the conclusion as well as the method. The most common handbook on Roman warfare, Rome at War, follows something of Keegan's model and argues that the 2nd century shortage of Roman soldiers was not because of long and bloody overseas deployments so much as draft dodging and such things, and mentions that most killing in battle was done by people who were centurions, or were going to be centurions. Most the killing happened after one line broke and ran; the enemy cavalry would try to ride them down, but most got away. That book is pretty well received in America at least. I would be shocked if something about that book is fundamentally flawed.
I don't know about Keegan's work.
