Blame was already set in their minds by this time. But the “they” of this particular example are the core Trump supporters. Those aren’t the ones that sway elections.

It’s undecided voters and independents that determine who will win. Among them are a demographic that is least likely to watch news on Fox, MSNBC, or CNN. Their opinions will be determined in the moments that editorial hits their social media and social groups. They don’t spend time and energy on research most of the time, focusing on their job, family, and most “at home” problems. They will look for the easiest to digest or understand explanation.

In your Covid example they are more likely to blame China for the outbreak than look at the various smaller groups/agencies/programs that may have played into preventing it. To them China, being a foreign entity and already established sometimes villain due to human rights issues, sweatshops, pollution, communist, trademark and intellectual property thief is a much more acceptable target (yes xenophobia is somewhat attributable here too). They adopted saying “China virus” as easily as MAGA.

And yet it won’t be what happened 4 years ago that will make up their mind, it will be “what are you doing to help ease my life today” that will tip the scales. Trump certainly talks a good game and Biden is in office during a huge inflationary period where their groceries cost more, rent is up, and their paycheck doesn’t go quite as far. For all I fear the actions of Project 2025 and others, it’s this group that worries me most. They could be a large part of what decides the next 4 years, and possibly the state of the union itself.
