Education is a part of it. I'd say a bigger issue is women's rights. Patriarchal societies for instance tend to not allow women to make their own choices.
As far as stabilizing drops in birth rates immigration happens usually because even more modern societies have a lot of different types of jobs. Immigrates coming to a country for jobs is as old as history. Interestingly this was normal behavior pre Reagan and then they would go home. Reagan's immigration reform, which did allow for a path to citizenship, also killed the idea that people would go back and forth. Yeah it still happens but not nearly to the same degree. It's just too hard now and much easier to stay.
Anyhow the data on how much the US for instance makes off immigration is pretty damning if you are anti immigration.
The problem is that it's not black and white and is extremely complicated. People fleeing oppression is not the same as people looking for seasonal work.
Also the fact that the Congress can't address it at all, because half of congress won't allow it, only makes it worse.
Then add on the fact that breaking things is far easier than fixing them.
But to your questions post WWII the US used to have a regular stream of immigration that kept the birth rates fairly stable in growth. Post 9/11 kind of seems the point where problems were ignored for political expedience and we have kind of poleaxed ourselves regularly.
Also look at brexit. They basically did what much of the right wants with cracking down on immigration. Now they are looking at one of the biggest drops in economic power in modern history. Last I read they are expected to drop behind Poland. That's not just because of immigration but it's a big part.
Edit. I forgot to mention that immigrants usually come from poorer nations and they also tend to have more kids.....thus countering birth rates.
