I mean the US DID have a much higher proportion of covid related deaths compared to most countries, not to mention that the absolute numbers of deaths was higher than even a lot of 3rd world nations, let alone any developed ones.

While the economy is tougher to pinpoint blame on any one leader, I think covid policy is much easier to assign blame. Trump really did have a role to play in acting like the virus wasn't a problem and spreading that mentality, so I think his attitude is well worth the blame. Influential "leaders" do have an impact when it comes to ideologically influenced actions.
