>1. Can I place a market order that carries into extended hours trading?

For equities - I do not think so. I am unaware of any ATS's that support market orders or brokers that would carry over market orders into extended session.

The caveat is that some ETFs trade until 4:15pm ET so those market orders may persist at the close until executed.

Bear in mind that a market order pretty much fills immediately if there is liquidity. So a market order carrying past the close can't really happen.

There are orders like MOC (market on close) - those can get executed sometime usually seconds after the close once the closing price is established.

Yes - it's a bit broker specific. On Schwab/TDA - it's a GTC+EXT order. On Fidelity - you set a TIF flag or (Time In Force). I believe that Fidelity calls it "Day+" for regular and ext session.

I believe that some those TIF settings are only available on ATP.
