Imo it's less reddit and more just a stage of people learning the fundamentals of how rights, and lack of them in some cases comes about and is sustained. When I was young (and I say this with shame anyone should to admit this) I had to have it pointed out to me that civil unions having the same protections/benefits of marriage is just saying "equal, *but* separate", ie segregation. Sometimes your heart is in the 'right' place (wanting to see people protected) but you fundamentally misunderstand that any "alternative" to equality is just ceding some amount of ground to the bigots challenging someone's right to just exist.
It's recognizing the safety from active persecution while not cognizant of how the refusal of full recognition as equal keeps open the door of persecution returning at any time, it's only really safety to those looking in. Those of us "inside" know exactly where the legal 'weakspot' not having full rights causes is at all times, we have to, our lives hinge on it not changing and responding to threats to that weakspot until we get equality.
