I have been a licensed clinician for years, and worked with many very ill folks. I am wondering if this poor young man had an established relationship with a mental health clinician or caseworker. I have had a couple of my clients in crisis on the phone while police were yelling at them in the background, and it was partly because of the clients' relationship to ME that helped them get through the situation safely. I was also able to get on the phone with the police and advocate for them that way. The clients trusted me and that rapport in the relationship enough so I could get through some of the paranoia and fear sometimes. None of that is to toot my own horn or to excuse police behavior, just my two cents of how I wish this interaction could have gone. Any way you slice it, they have NON LETHAL for a flipping reason. This story just breaks my heart. :(
